Key members of the IDD K-9 team love to wag their tails. They are the elite K-9 Corp, which includes eight outstanding dogs.
Companies who want to maintain a drug-free workplace find that utilizing the K-9 searches can create a tremendous deterrent against drugs in the workplace. This is also true for educational institutions that strive to promote a drug-free environment, Lepre said.
IDD dog handlers adhere to an intensive training program that teaches K-9s to sniff out fired weapons, as well as illegal drugs. The eight dog handlers have more than 100 years of collective experience working with dogs.
The dogs are trained to find the following illegal narcotics: marijuana, cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, and meth-amphetamine and other derivatives."Our dogs pose no danger to the employees of our clients nor do they frighten the teachers and students of the educational facilities we search," P.J. Chighizola, the IDD Director of Operations, said.
"When our dogs find drugs or weapons, our K-9s use the passive alert indications," Chighizola said.
Passive alert means the K-9 calmly sits near the spot of discovery. This provides a safer, non-threatening reaction from the public.
The IDD elite team is lead by Mel, a golden retriever, who has more than 15 years of outstanding service.
Our other members include: Chester, Jinx, Kessey, Lira, Patti, Max and Rowdy.
